As someone who’s stood behind a booth for 12-hour show days talking about handmade ring dishes, trays, and art — I can tell you: no amount of caffeine can save you if you’re not prepared.
From wholesale tradeshows to the One of a Kind Show in Toronto, I’ve experienced the wild mix of B2B deals, B2C conversations, retail sales, and the glorious chaos of show days. Whether you're a maker, small business owner, or stocking up for the season, here’s what I consider non-negotiables when hitting the floor.
1. A Portable Battery Pack (Trust Me)
Your phone will be working harder than you are — taking payments, scanning badges, grabbing content, and texting your booth neighbor about snacks. A battery pack is essential. I once ran out mid-day and had to handwrite receipts — never again.
2. Comfortable (But Cute) Shoes
When you’re standing from open to close, comfort becomes your new best friend. I’ve tried it all — flats, boots, sneakers — and finally landed on a pair that balances function with style. Remember: no one cares what shoes you’re wearing if you’re limping by day two.
3. Phone Lanyard or Crossbody Case
You’re constantly reaching for your phone. Instead of digging through your bag 50 times, wear it. Whether you’re snapping booth photos or checking DMs, a hands-free setup saves time and stress.
4. High-Protein, Low-Mess Snacks
If you wait for lunch, you’ll be eating it at 4 p.m. while hiding behind your display. I always pack protein bars that don’t melt or crumble. Pro tip: stash extra for your booth neighbors — they’ll love you forever.
5. An Insulated Water Bottle
Hydration is survival. Between dry convention air, talking non-stop, and constant movement, you need water — or warm tea — nearby at all times. I bring my bottle pre-filled so I’m not stuck worrying about it!
6. A Sturdy (Cute) Backpack or Tote
A backpack with compartments saves your back and your sanity. Mine holds everything: Laptop, marketing materials, snacks, water, restocks, business cards, orders, and sometimes a backup pair of socks.
7. Hand Sanitizer (and Maybe a Face Mist)
Shows are full of handshakes and high-fives. Keep sanitizer close for easy access. I also carry a little face mist to freshen up mid-day — it’s a game-changer when you’ve been under lights for hours.
Final Thoughts
Whether you're selling, buying, or just soaking up the energy, tradeshows are a marathon, not a sprint. These essentials have helped me get through some of the busiest events of my career — with energy left to enjoy it.
I’ve learned a lot over the years — these are just the basics.
